Friends & Neighbors,

I am pleased to share the 2024 PATH Foundation Community Report.

PATH provided resources and support to nonprofits in our three-county footprint with 187 individual grants that totaled over $10.3M.

As we look back on this past year, we are reminded of the incredible work happening across our community. Our grantees continue to address some of the most pressing challenges, including affordable housing, mental health, and access to basic services like food and healthcare. Through their tireless efforts, these organizations are making a meaningful difference, and we are proud to support them.

From expanding mental health resources to collaborating to provide rural transportation, local nonprofits are helping to ensure that every community member has the opportunity to thrive. Their work is a testament to what can be achieved when we come together to address complex challenges with compassion and innovation.

The PATH Foundation is privileged to partner with so many dedicated organizations that are transforming lives and strengthening our community. As we move forward, we remain committed to providing the resources and support needed to amplify their impact. Together, we create a healthier, more vibrant future for everyone.

THE PATH FOUNDATION

is a philanthropic foundation that supports Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Culpeper counties. Since 2014, we have invested over $95M in our community. Through grants, programs, and partnerships, we help provide resources to organizations that align with our mission and values to serve our community.

HEALTH PRIORITIES

Grant recipients must align with one or more of our core focus areas: Access to Health, Childhood Wellness, Mental Health, and Senior Services.

OUR MISSION

The PATH Foundation strengthens the health and vitality of our community.

OUR VISION

We want our community to thrive as a place where everyone has a healthy place to live, work, play, and grow.

The PATH Resource Center began as a partnership with the Charlottesville-based Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE), which has grown to include the PATH Volunteer Hub, PATH Community Link, and a Warrenton office for CNE.

The PATH Foundation also operates community meeting rooms (available free of charge to nonprofits) and hosts the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Fauquier, and the newly added Ways to Work program in the Resource Center.

The PATH Volunteer Hub is home to LetsVolunteer.org, an online platform that connects local nonprofits with community members looking to volunteer their time. Today, more than 6,815 volunteers are registered on the platform. The Volunteer Hub also provides case-by-case assistance and advice on implementing volunteer programs. In addition, the Volunteer Hub spearheads an annual, community-wide month of service: Let’s Volunteer Days.

The Center for Nonprofit Excellence at the PATH Resource Center offers personalized tools, training, consulting, and resources to nonprofits in the Foundation footprint. With the goal of strengthening the impact of nonprofits in the community, the PATH Resource Center also offers classes, workshops, access to the Foundation Directory Online, and many more services.

PATH Community Link is a free, confidential service connecting residents of Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison, and Orange counties with community resources. Operated through the PATH Resource Center, our expert staff helps individuals find assistance for a variety of needs.

The service provides referrals for:

  • Housing assistance, including emergency shelter and rental support
  • Transportation options such as public transit and ride services
  • Healthcare resources, including clinics and mental health services
  • Food assistance through local pantries and meal programs
  • Childcare resources for affordable, reliable care
  • Financial aid for utilities, bills, and emergencies
  • Other community services tailored to individual needs

All services are free and confidential. Support is available in both English and Spanish (Se habla Español).

Community Engagement

Kona Ice Pop-Ups

Last summer we held 17 free shaved ice pop-up events for the community. Thank you to every organization who coordinated with us to make summer a success, and Kona Ice, for providing frozen sweet treats to nearly 3,000 folks of all ages!

Summer Intern Program

Over eight weeks, 21 PATH interns gathered to plan and execute their group project, a mural in the George Washington Carver Agriculture Research Center. Interns worked with local artist, Crystal Burnham, to design and paint the mural as a nod to the Carver Food Enterprise Center—a nonprofit shared commercial kitchen, food business incubator, classroom, and project of the Carver Center. Scan the QR code to watch the mural come to life!

Merry Kindness and Happy Nice Year!

In the spirit of the holiday season, we distributed 300 free copies of Upworthy’s Good People: Stories From the Best of Humanity to our community. Community members were encouraged to submit stories of Holiday Kindnesses, both big and small, for the opportunity to award $1,000 to an area nonprofit. Community members gave $13,000 to their favorite organizations.

Give Local Piedmont & High School Senior Giving

The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation (NPCF) hosted their annual Give Local Piedmont event in May—an opportunity for nonprofits serving the region to raise funds and spread the word about their missions. PATH awarded NPCF $100K to benefit participating nonprofits.

3,212 donors supported 217 organizations with $1,148,240!

PATH’s High School Senior Giving program is an opportunity for seniors to select local nonprofits enrolled in Give Local Piedmont to receive PATH donations. In 2024, we offered $25 per student and 1,716 seniors from Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Culpeper counties contributed $42,900 to 21 local nonprofits.

Piedmont Smiles

PATH supported the Fauquier Free Clinic’s annual free community dental day, Piedmont Smiles, through event planning, funding, and volunteer recruitment via the PATH Volunteer Hub.

Last November, 280 patients were served with over 1,456 dental procedures valued at over $172,000 in care.

Let’s Volunteer Days & Season of Giving

During Global Volunteer Month in April, nonprofits could apply for $1,000 to offset the cost of a volunteer project. 500 community members volunteered for 37 project opportunities!

Each holiday season, the PATH Volunteer Hub’s Season of Giving encourages the public to give back through volunteer opportunities on the PATH Volunteer Hub site. In 2024, we had 10 opportunities with 30 volunteer responses.

Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission:

Regional Transportation Collaborative

The Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission (RRRC) is a public agency that serves as the local planning and development organization for the region: Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison, and Orange counties. It provides leadership, partnerships, and collaborations to address issues such as transportation, public health, and economic development.

By working with local governments, businesses, and citizens, RRRC coordinates planning efforts to improve the quality of life for our communities. In 2024, RRRC received $40,000 from PATH toward the Regional Farm to School Liaison that coordinates planning and assists with farm-to-school efforts across the district; and $240,000 for the Regional Transportation Collaborative (RTC).

In 2021-22, RRRC launched the Regional Transportation Collaborative, an initiative aimed at addressing transportation challenges, particularly for those facing mobility barriers. This project grew from a collaboration with PATH, as a community-driven transportation solution.

The RTC provides essential services for individuals with limited access to cars or those living in rural areas. Services include rides for medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other critical needs. Additionally, staff at the RTC Mobility Center go beyond transportation services by helping individuals navigate and connect with essential community resources.

The Collaborative brings together various organizations to create a comprehensive

transportation system that meets the diverse needs of our region. In 2024, the RTC provided 12,589 rides covering over 151,000 miles.

Key partners include Aging Together, Department of Social Services, Encompass Community Supports, Hero’s Bridge, LOWLINC, Rapp at Home, Virginia Regional Transit, and VolTran, all of which ensure that services are accessible to vulnerable populations. Other collaborators like parks and recreation programs, religious organizations, and public libraries also help expand our communities’ transportation network, especially in rural areas.

In 2024 alone, 38 VolTran drivers volunteered 4,619 hours, traveled 80,620 miles, and gave 3,818 rides to area residents. VolTran remains the most utilized volunteer transportation provider in our footprint, accounting for over 75% of all volunteer transportation in the region.

Through participation with a diverse range of partners, the RTC has had a profound impact by fostering autonomy, increasing mobility, and improving access to critical services. This initiative continues to evolve, serving as a model for transportation coordination across the state.

The impact of the Regional Transportation Collaborative is not just measured by the numbers, but by the increased connectivity and support it offers to the region’s most vulnerable populations, empowering them to live more independent, fulfilling lives.

Overview of Grants

PATH offers four different grant opportunities: Flexible Funding, Make it Happen! Technical Assistance, and the Better Together Fund. Flexible Funding grants are offered twice each fiscal year, while Make it Happen! and Technical Assistance grants are accepted on a rolling basis.

Flexible Funding

Flexible Funding grants provide unrestricted general operating support to eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Organizations may apply for funding to be used as needed to advance their mission. Flexible Funding grants must align with at least one of PATH’s four priorities: Access to Health, Childhood Wellness, Mental Health, or Senior Services.

Make it Happen!

Make it Happen! grants foster the can-do attitude of our region and promote creativity in our communities. By offering up to $25,000 in funding, the goal of these grants is to provide a bright spot in the community through encouraging fresh ideas from new voices.

Technical Assistance

Funds can be used for capacity-building needs such as technology upgrades, leadership training, strategic planning, and other professional development opportunities. Grants are available up to $25,000 and applicants are required to match 20% of the requested amount.

Better Together

Better Together funding supports nonprofit-led events that bring people together. We provide up to $2,500 to nonprofits to plan community-facing events. This funding opportunity was offered between April and August 2024.

Grant Highlights

Generations Central Adult Day Center

Generations Central is a “home away from home” where seniors can thrive and belong. In 2024, Generations Central received $62,500 in funding to enhance marketing, programs, and strategic planning for intergenerational collaboration.

The center fosters meaningful connections across age groups, creating a safe space for seniors, caregivers, and volunteers to interact. Programs include the weekly Stronger Memory class, which improves cognitive abilities through creative arts, chair exercises, expert presentations, brain games, and social activities.

Additionally, a monthly Caregiver Support Group offers emotional, educational, and social support to those caring for seniors facing age-related challenges.

Through its commitment to community and connection, Generations Central ensures that seniors receive not only care, but also joy, purpose, and lasting relationships.

Grant Highlights

Free Clinic of Culpeper

The Free Clinic of Culpeper, operated by the Culpeper Wellness Foundation, offers confidential medical care and prescriptions to uninsured adults with incomes at or below 300% of the federal poverty level in Culpeper County. In 2024, PATH granted $75,000 for operating support, enabling clinic staff to continue providing treatment for a multitude of illnesses—both acute and chronic. The Clinic runs a licensed pharmacy and partners with Rx Partnership and the Medications Access Program to provide prescription medications to patients. Each year, the Free Clinic provides over 8,500 prescription medications valued at $1.4M.

FRESH

Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health (FRESH) is improving student wellness through three key initiatives, supported by a $727,000 grant from the PATH Foundation. FRESH Eats enhances school meals with fresh, seasonal produce and scratch-made dishes in partnership with Fauquier County Public Schools. FRESH Moves encourages physical activity through movement breaks, school events, and teacher training. FRESH Reads promotes literacy by distributing free books at school and community events, helping build home libraries. Additionally, during the summer months, FRESH on Wheels partners with local organizations to bring its programming to community events throughout Fauquier County. Together, these initiatives foster healthier, more engaged students and families all year round.

Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center

Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center is a place where individuals with special challenges come together, and where victories—some dramatic, some modest, but all significant—are celebrated. With $30,000 in Flexible Funding, the Center’s individualized equestrian programs help riders build confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment. Each lesson fosters personal growth, creating a supportive environment where participants not only develop new skills but also gain self-esteem and a stronger sense of self-worth.

Rapp at Home: Rappahannock Rural Health Network

In 2024, Rapp at Home received $65,000 in PATH funding to continue their mission of sustaining and enriching Rappahannock County older adults to age in the community comfortably, safely, independently, and with peace of mind by fostering the community support and services needed to do so. Ongoing PATH support helped Rapp at Home leverage a $99,000 development grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services that led to the Rappahannock Rural Heath Network (RRHN). The goal of RRHN is to improve the quality and accessibility of basic health care in Rappahannock, Culpeper, and Warren counties. More than a dozen partner agencies have come together around efforts to expand access to the school-based health clinic at Rappahannock elementary school; increase health care services for the most rural residents through community paramedicine strategies; and public education to improve chronic disease management and outcomes.

Rapp Center for Education

In 2024, the Rapp Center for Education (RappCE) received nearly $62,000 to further their mission to provide residents of Rappahannock County and nearby areas with educational experiences that enhance knowledge, employability, and quality of life to build and sustain a stronger community. RappCE offers vital workforce training and lifelong learning opportunities through its Workforce

Training Certification Courses, featuring a rotating selection of high-demand programs like Clinical Medical Assistant, Limited License Radiologic Tech, and butchery. In addition, their Lifelong Learning program offers non-credit classes in areas such as history, the arts, technology, and environmental studies.
